Colours are added to improve the appearance of foods.
For example, Coca-Cola contains caramel colouring which is a widely-used food colouring, found in many kinds of processed food, including: beer, brown bread, buns, and chocolate. It is made by a process called caramelisation. Although made from sugar the amount present is not physiologically significant so it doesn’t contribute to the sugar/calorie content of a can of Coca-Cola.
All the ingredients The Coca-Cola Company uses in its beverages are suitable for use in food and are in compliance with regulatory requirements.
